On 12 June, 1967 architects Alberto Lopez and Rafael Lopez Palanco began construction of the Elviria Hilton Hotel with a budget of 200 million pesetas (approximately $120,000 today). The main body of the hotel was a striking tower with six ‘Gaudi’ style branched supports at the foot of the structure.
Interestingly on Generalisimo Francisco Franco’s last trip to Marbella in the spring of 1973 to open the new Clinica Incosol, he noticed the towers of the Hilton Hotel and was absolutely horrified. He gave the order that such tall buildings should never again scar the skyline of Marbella as they had in Torremolinos and Benalmadena.
At the end of the 1970’s, when the tourist industry started to boom in Marbella, the Hilton Group sold the hotel, and the name was changed to the Hotel Don Carlos.
In the following years, the Don Carlos played hosts to royalty and aristocrats from all over the world. They also staged glitzy parties for celebrities and actors which helped promote Marbella and the Costa del Sol as a prestigious holiday resort.
Today, the world famous Nikki Beach Marbella at the Don Carlos Resort attracts sun seekers and fun seekers from every corner of the globe and hosts some of the hottest summer parties in Marbella.
