Magical Marbella Feria – party time in June

If you are lucky enough to be on the Costa del Sol during June, don’t miss the magical Marbella Feria taking place from the 11th for one week.

The Feria de San Bernabe, in honour of the Patron Saint of Marbella take place in the old town during the day in a riot of colourful costumes, music, wine and dancing. In the evening the fun moves to the fairground, where it continues until the small hours of the morning.

During feria week the traditional pilgrimage of San Bernabe takes places with horses, oxen and carriages taking part in the celebrations.

The pride of the local people during feria week is wonderful to see – the women showing off their beautiful flamenco dresses as they perch side-saddle behind the elegant horsemen in their full Spanish cenachero costume including a sombrero cordobés (hat from Cordoba), fajín (a red sash) and tirantes (braces).

The Parque Alameda in the centre of town is a good place to start. Outdoor bars, loud music and a fun crowd dance and drink their way down the Avenida del Mar, where the famous Dali statues are situated.

After a few glasses of fino in the Parque Alameda, walk up to Orange Square, passing live entertainers on every street corner.

Marbella Feria is one of the most popular events throughout the year and the streets of the town, including local bars and restaurants are festooned in flags, banners and bunting to leave the tourists in no doubt that this is feria week.

On entering the fairground in the evening, the lights and sounds are incredible.  Not for the faint-hearted, music booms from every stall and ride. The casetas, (marquees) which are run by private associations, within the feria ground host some of Andalucia´s most talented flamenco singers and dancers.

You won’t go hungry at Marbella Feria. Outside bars serve Spanish favourites such as marinated pork skewers, prawns and octopus with copious amounts of beer and wine.

There is no such thing as closing time at Marbella Feria. Many revellers stay at the feria all night and enjoy an early morning coffee with churros at one of the many local cafés surrounding the fairground.

If you want to make a day of it, why not spend the morning on the beach in Marbella, and enjoy the fun and frolics of the feria later in the day. You will be spoilt for choice when it comes to great places to eat and drink on the seafront, and the weather in June is perfect for spending the afternoon relaxing in one of the many beach bars and eating fresh fish, seafood and paella.

Whatever time of day you choose to visit the Marbella feria this year, you will find plenty of live entertainment, dancing, drinking and merrymaking throughout the town. If you are planning to over-indulge, as most of us do at feria time, you can leave the car at home and use the regular bus service or taxi into town.
