Christmas & New Year Celebrations in Marbella

With just 89 days left until Christmas Day (and counting), Marbella and the Costa del Sol is gearing up for another exciting festive season.

If you are lucky enough to be spending Christmas in Marbella, check out the wonderful Christmas menus on offer at some of the finest restaurants along the coast. Most restaurants are fully booked for Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve by early October so it is worth booking now if you know where you want to go.

Christmas in Spain starts with La Noche Buena, Christmas Eve, which is celebrated as a family occasion with a vast family meal at home, followed by midnight mass. After leaving church, families either return home to carry on the party or stay out late to celebrate. Most bars and club stay open well into the early hours of the next day.

Visit the various Nativity Scenes around the town, and make the most of New Year´s Eve in Orange Square in the Old Town. Whether you decide to stay home to see in the New Year or join the thousands of revellers who pack the town centre of Marbella, you are sure to have a great time.

New Year celebrations in Spain are special and unique. A holiday mood sets in as New Year's Eve approaches.

The New Year twelve grapes of luck have been a Spanish tradition since 1909 when in December of that year, a group of Alicante wine producers came up with the idea to sell a huge amount of grapes from an excellent harvest. The tradition is that a grape has to be eaten with each bell that strikes at midnight on the 31st December, which will lead to a year of prosperity.

Take a bottle of cava with you and share it with other party goers – New Year’s Eve usually carries on until the early hours of the next day with nightclubs and late bars hosting special parties.

Most popular with the children, the Fiesta de los Reyes, the Three Kings Parade, is held on the evening of January 5th, the official day when Spanish children receive their gifts is January 6th. Three men, dressed as kings, parade through the streets on floats, mules or horseback and scatter thousands of sweets to the waiting children. Be sure to get there early for a good vantage spot. This event starts around 6pm and makes its way along the main street in Marbella, Calle Ricardo Soriano.

Marbella is a truly magical place to be during Christmas and New Year. Whether you enjoy beach walks, golfing, vibrant nightlife or eating out in award-winning restaurants, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to things to see and do.

The weather during December and January can be chilly at night (average 14C during the day), but you will still have plenty of opportunity do enjoy the beach bars at lunch time.
